Scope of work

  • Replacement of the AWRSE tank outlet pipework feeding slurry Mixers A, B and C.
  • Fabrication and supply of 250NB and 350NB carbon steel spools to SABS 719 Grade B, flanged to SABS 1123, with 45° and 90° short-radius bends, tees and Y-pieces.
  • Internal lining of all spools and fittings with 6 mm chloroprene rubber.
  • Rubber lining of the slurry plant mixers.
  • Main Contractor responsibilities under the OHS Act: safety file, appointments, permit-to-work and confined-space controls.

Method and quality

Surface preparationGrit blasting to ISO 8501-1 Sa 3 with a 40–60 µm profile; dust verified to ISO 8502-3 rating 1; primer applied within four hours of blasting.
LiningAdhesive and rubber installed by tube-pull and manual rolling and stitching with 25–50 mm overlaps, cured at ambient temperature.
InspectionEvery spool inspected for thickness (6 mm ±10%), hardness (±5 Shore A), adhesion to ASTM D429 where required, and holiday spark-tested to zero defects.
Quality controlQuality control plan with hold and witness points, signed off by Umbusso QC, the lining subcontractor’s QC, Eskom QC and the Eskom engineer.

Challenges and how they were closed

Transport damage to some spools required workshop rework and relining; an incorrect external paint colour was rectified to the Eskom coating standard; humidity extended curing on some batches. Each was closed through the non-conformance process and re-inspected before acceptance.

Outcome

All pipework lined, tested and delivered. The full data book — method statement, quality control plan, calibration certificates, material traceability, inspection reports and NCR close-outs — was submitted to Eskom Engineering and Quality, and the work was formally accepted by Eskom.

Rubber-lined pipe and tanks

Specifying and inspecting rubber lining for slurry service: surface preparation, thickness, hardness and spark testing

Rubber lining fails at the preparation stage, not the rubber. This article sets out what to specify and what to witness — blast standard, profile, dust, primer window, thickness, hardness, adhesion and holiday testing — using a slurry-plant scope as the worked example.

What ISO 3834-2 and ASME IX qualification mean for a plant owner buying pipe welding

“Coded welding” is often claimed and rarely explained. This article explains what a plant owner is actually buying when a fabricator holds ISO 3834-2 certification and ASME IX qualified procedures and welders, and what to ask for on the next piping order.

Building a shutdown scope a contractor can price: QCPs, hold points, data books and what Eskom returnables require

An outage scope that cannot be priced properly is executed badly. This article sets out what a plant should put in front of a contractor, what the contractor should return, and how quality control plans, hold points and data books keep the work honest from award to close-out.
