Lifting equipment is statutory equipment: cranes, hoists and tackle must be inspected, load-tested and recorded, and a lapsed record stops an outage as surely as a failed brake. Umbusso Engineers maintains, repairs and load-tests overhead cranes and hoists, inspects and colour-codes chains, slings, shackles and lifting beams, and provides rigging crews for the installation and removal of plant items.

We operate our own 15-ton overhead crane in the Benoni South engineering workshop, source mobile cranes through established hire partners for site work, and hold ISO 45001:2018 certification for occupational health and safety management. Rope access and work-at-height capability is supported by a certified equipment inspection regime.

What we do

  • Overhead crane and hoist maintenance: brakes, limit switches, wire rope, long-travel wheels and rails, electrics.
  • Repair and component replacement, followed by load testing and certification.
  • Statutory inspection and colour-coding of lifting tackle — chain slings, wire rope slings, webbing, shackles, eyebolts and lifting beams — with a register for the client.
  • Rigging studies and rigging crews for plant installation, removal and outage lifts.
  • Mobile crane hire and supervision through our hire partners for site lifts.

Standards, quality and documentation

Inspection, testing and record-keeping follow the Driven Machinery Regulations under the Occupational Health and Safety Act, with lifting machines and tackle recorded in a register the client can present at audit. Site lifting is planned with a lifting plan and risk assessment, and our lifting supervisors and riggers hold the qualifications the site requires. Our safety management system is certified to ISO 45001:2018.
