Safety, health and environment policy

Umbusso Engineers (Pty) Ltd commits to the prevention of injury, ill health and pollution in everything we do, measured against our clients’ safety, health and environmental targets and our own. We comply with the Occupational Health and Safety Act, the Construction Regulations, and every legal and client requirement that applies to the hazards of our work and the environmental aspects of our operations, and we communicate those requirements to everyone who works for or on behalf of the company.

Our management system is certified to ISO 45001:2018 and ISO 14001:2015. Our safety officer and quality controller hold independent authority to stop work. This policy is reviewed periodically for continued suitability, is available to all interested parties, and is endorsed by top management, who accept accountability for its achievement.

Quality policy in practice

Quality at Umbusso is procedural, not promotional. Every order — a single machined bush or a Main Contractor appointment — runs under a quality control plan and, where the client requires it, an inspection and test plan with hold and witness points agreed before work starts.

  • Quality control plan issued with the quotation and agreed at award; on the conveyor pulley order it was counter-signed by Eskom Quality Assurance and the site engineer before manufacture.
  • Material certificates, welder and procedure qualifications and calibration certificates retained per order.
  • Non-conformances raised, closed and re-inspected through a formal NCR process — as on the slurry-plant rubber-lining contract.
  • Data book at close-out: method statements, QCP, inspection reports, NDT, traceability and NCR close-outs.
  • Management review minutes held for our Eskom contracts.

How we work on site

Before mobilisation

Safety file compiled; competent-person appointments made; baseline risk assessment and method statements submitted; inductions and medical surveillance current.

Permit and isolation

Work under the client’s permit-to-work and lock-out regime; confined-space entry with atmosphere testing and standby; fall-protection plan for work at height.

During the work

Daily task risk assessments and toolbox talks; hold points witnessed; stop-work authority held by the safety officer and quality controller.

Environment

Waste segregation, spill control and dust management per the ISO 14001 system and the site’s environmental requirements.

Close-out

Safety file and data book handed over; incidents, near misses and lessons captured in management review.

Main Contractor responsibilities

On 13 October 2025 Eskom appointed Umbusso as Main Contractor under section 16(2) of the OHS Act and Construction Regulation 5(1)(k) for a slurry-plant rubber-lining contract. Under that appointment we carried the safety file, the competent-person appointments, permit and confined-space controls and the coordination of every person on the scope. We take the same appointment on other sites where the client requires it.

Welding quality

Our welding quality system is certified to ISO 3834-2:2021 by JC Auditors. That means qualified ASME IX procedures for carbon, chromium-molybdenum and stainless steels, welders holding current performance qualifications, a named welding coordinator, calibrated equipment and inspection to the project plan. The certified scope covers pressure vessels, pressure piping, boilers, heat exchangers, tanks, sheet metal and structural steel.

Safety performance

A measured safety statistic (hours worked, recordable incidents and lost-time injury frequency) will be published here once the figures for the current reporting period are compiled. We do not publish unmeasured claims such as a “100% safety record”.

Returnables for tenders

The full returnables pack — certificates, CIDB extract, COIDA letter of good standing, B-BBEE affidavit, tax compliance confirmation (PIN available on request), company registration and CSD report — is available to prospective clients. Use the request form and select “Compliance documents” as the subject.

Need our safety file or quality plan for a tender?

Tell us the scope and the site and we will send the relevant documents with a quotation or as a standalone returnables pack.
