Piping and valves — fabrication, installation and maintenance
Pipe spools fabricated to ASME B31.1 and B31.3 in carbon, alloy and stainless steel, installed and tested on site, with valve overhaul and replacement and rubber lining for corrosive and abrasive service.

Piping fails at the weld, the flange or the lining. Umbusso Engineers fabricates pipe spools in our Evander workshop, installs and tests them on site, and maintains the valves and pipework that carry water, slurry, steam and process fluids around a plant. Fabrication and site welding run under our ISO 3834-2 certified welding system, with pressure piping, ASME B31.1, ASME B31.3 and EN 13480 in the certified scope.
On the slurry plant contract we fabricated 250NB and 350NB carbon steel spools, bends, tees and Y-pieces to SABS 719 Grade B with SABS 1123 flanges, lined them with 6 mm chloroprene rubber, and replaced the AWRSE tank outlet pipework to three slurry mixers as Main Contractor.
What we do
- Pipe spool fabrication to isometrics in carbon steel, chromium-molybdenum and austenitic stainless steel.
- Site installation, alignment, bolting and hydrostatic or pneumatic testing to the inspection and test plan.
- Valve overhaul, replacement and repacking; gate, globe, check and butterfly valves.
- Rubber lining of pipe spools and fittings for slurry, ash-water and corrosive service.
- Pipe supports, hangers and rack modifications; insulation and coating to specification.
Standards, quality and documentation
Welding is performed to ASME IX procedure specifications qualified for P-No. 1 carbon steel, P-No. 5 chromium-molybdenum and P-No. 8 austenitic stainless steel base metals, by welders holding current ASME IX performance qualifications, under a named welding coordinator. Our ISO 3834-2 certificate covers pressure piping and equipment with ASME B31.1, B31.3, EN 13480 and PD 5500 among the construction standards. Weld inspection, NDT and pressure testing follow the project inspection and test plan.

Frequently asked
Which materials and codes can you weld to?
Carbon steel, chromium-molybdenum and austenitic stainless steel under ASME IX procedures, with ASME B31.1, B31.3, ASME VIII, EN 13480, EN 13445 and PD 5500 in our ISO 3834-2 certified scope.
Can you rubber-line pipework you fabricate?
Yes. Spools are blasted, primed, lined and spark-tested in our workshop before delivery, as on the slurry plant contract. See the rubber lining service page for the method.
Do you provide a data book?
Every piping order closes out with the quality control plan, weld maps, welder and procedure qualifications, material certificates, NDT and pressure test records.

Specifying and inspecting rubber lining for slurry service: surface preparation, thickness, hardness and spark testing
Rubber lining fails at the preparation stage, not the rubber. This article sets out what to specify and what to witness — blast standard, profile, dust, primer window, thickness, hardness, adhesion and holiday testing — using a slurry-plant scope as the worked example.

“Coded welding” is often claimed and rarely explained. This article explains what a plant owner is actually buying when a fabricator holds ISO 3834-2 certification and ASME IX qualified procedures and welders, and what to ask for on the next piping order.
