Conveyor pulley manufacture and refurbishment
Head, drive, take-up and snub pulleys manufactured to client drawing under a quality control plan the client counter-signs before we cut steel. Eighteen delivered at an Eskom power station in 2025.

Conveyor pulleys are where materials-handling plant loses availability: lagging wears through, shells crack at the end-disc weld, locking elements loosen and bearings run hot until the belt stops. Umbusso Engineers manufactures new pulleys and refurbishes existing ones to the client’s drawing, with the drum, end discs, shaft, locking assemblies and lagging specified, inspected and documented as a single traceable unit.
Our reference order is the manufacture and supply of eighteen conveyor pulleys for Eskom’s an Eskom power station — twelve Ø550 mm take-up pulleys, two Ø950 mm head pulleys, two Ø950 mm drive pulleys and two high-tension snub pulleys — executed under an inspection and test plan that Eskom Quality Assurance and the site engineer counter-signed before manufacture began, and delivered to site stores between March and April 2025.
What we do
- New pulleys to client or OEM drawing: drum, end discs, hubs, shaft, locking elements and lagging.
- Refurbishment of existing pulleys: shell inspection, end-disc weld repair, shaft replacement, re-lagging.
- Lagging options to specification — plain, diamond and ceramic rubber lagging.
- Supply of matching pillow blocks, spherical roller bearings, adaptor sleeves, idler frames and couplings against the same order.
- Balancing, dimensional inspection and marking to purchase-order line item.
Standards, quality and documentation
Every order runs under a Quality Control Plan and Inspection and Test Plan with client hold and witness points. Welding on pulley shells and end discs is performed under our ISO 3834-2 certified welding system by welders holding current ASME IX performance qualifications. Material certificates for shell plate, shaft and lagging are retained in the order data book, and the pulleys are marked and tagged to the purchase order before dispatch.

How an order runs
Send the drawing, scope or problem. We reply with questions or a site-visit date.
We confirm the scope, access, outage window and your quality and safety requirements.
Priced quotation with a quality control plan outline so the hold points are agreed before award.
Work under permit-to-work and the agreed plan, with witnessed hold points and progress reporting.
Inspection records, certificates and material traceability compiled into the data book and handed over.
Frequently asked
Can you manufacture to our existing drawing, or do we need a new design?
We manufacture to your drawing or the OEM drawing. Where a drawing is missing we can measure an existing pulley and prepare a manufacturing drawing for your approval before the quality plan is issued.
What quality documentation comes with the pulleys?
A quality control plan and inspection and test plan agreed with you before manufacture, material certificates for shell, discs and shaft, dimensional inspection records, and a data book at delivery. On that order the plan was counter-signed by Eskom Quality Assurance and the site engineer.
Do you supply the bearings and plummer blocks as well?
Yes. That order included pillow blocks, spherical roller bearings, adaptor sleeves, idler frames and grid couplings against the same purchase order, sourced through our rotating-equipment supply partners.

Conveyor pulley failure: when to refurbish and when to replace
Lagging wear, shell cracking, locking-element slip and bearing failure are the four ways a pulley takes a conveyor down. This article sets out how each shows itself, what to inspect, and how to decide between re-lagging, refurbishment and a new pulley.
