Camera, access-control and network maintenance on a power-station perimeter
Surveillance on an industrial site is plant infrastructure that degrades like any other. This article covers the components, how they fail, and a maintenance approach built on seven Eskom orders at an Eskom power station.

Equipment
PTZ and fixed IP cameras on masts, buildings and plant such as the fuel-oil facility; access-control turnstiles, readers and controllers at the gatehouse and administration entrances; the surveillance network — switches, structured cabling, fibre and wireless links — and recording and monitoring systems in the control room.
Failure modes
Cameras lose coverage through lens contamination, misalignment, water ingress and power or network faults; PTZ mechanisms wear; access-control readers and turnstiles fail mechanically and electrically; cabling is damaged by construction work, rodents and UV; recorders fill or fail so footage cannot be retrieved; and intrusion systems generate false alarms until they are ignored.
Common causes
Dust, heat and vibration on an operating plant; cable routes disturbed by other contractors; no cleaning and alignment schedule; obsolete equipment without spares; and systems installed without documentation.
Inspection
Walk every camera position with the control room online; check image quality by day and night, PTZ presets, housing seals, mast condition and cable terminations; test each access point end to end; inspect cabling routes and patch panels; confirm recording retention and retrieval; and issue an assessment report ranking faults and vulnerabilities.
Maintenance
Clean and re-align cameras on a schedule; service PTZ units and turnstiles to the manufacturer’s intervals; label and document cabling and re-route it properly when construction requires; keep firmware and recording systems current; and test intrusion detection so alarms are trusted.
Repair
Replace failed cameras and readers with documented equivalents; re-terminate or re-route damaged CAT6 and fibre; repair or replace turnstile mechanisms; recover footage from failed recorders where possible. Each visit is reported so the client has a maintenance history per device.
Replacement
Replace systems that are obsolete, unsupported or inadequate for the site’s current risk assessment, starting with the assessment report so the investment is targeted.
Umbusso capability
Between January 2021 and April 2022 Umbusso completed seven Eskom orders at an Eskom power station: PTZ and fixed IP camera installation across the fuel-oil plant, Helix rotor flow meters, CCTV maintenance, surveillance network infrastructure, CAT6 structured cabling re-routing and remote intrusion monitoring, each closed with an Eskom completion certificate. In 2023 the company carried out access-control and surveillance diagnostics and issued a site security assessment report.
